The Bam Lab for Marine Geochemistry (www.wokilbam.com) at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is seeking applicants for graduate assistant pursuing a master’s in marine science, beginning as early as Summer/Fall 2025. The successful applicant will work on coastal carbon dynamics in Mississippi Bight using a multi-isotopes tracer approach. The air-sea CO2 fluxes in coastal ocean and continental margins are a major component of global carbon cycles, responsible for 15-21% of the total oceanic CO2 uptake despite occupying only 7% of the ocean’s surface. However, these fluxes remain poorly constrained due to spatiotemporal variability associated with freshwater inputs, productivity, gas transfer velocity and extreme events. This project will focus on estimating the transport and residence time of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) using radium isotopes (223Ra-224Ra) and tracing air-sea exchange of CO2 using radon (222Rn) as a tracer. We seek candidates with a strong background in chemical analyses, proficiency in data analysis and excellent organizational skills. Interested candidates can send Dr. Wokil Bam (wokil.bam@usm.com ) a CV, research statement and academic transcripts (unofficial is ok for the initial consideration).

Application details may be found at https://www.usm.edu/graduate-programs/marine-science.php. All Marine Science graduate assistants are supported with an annual resource package, including a tuition waiver and a stipend with benefits (approx. $24000 per year). USM has been designated as the flagship university for Marine Science in the state of Mississippi and is an R1 Carnegie Research University. Marine Science faculty and graduate programs are housed at Stennis Space Center (https://www.usm.edu/ocean-science-engineering/about-overview.php) which is a federal city that boasts the world’s largest concentration of oceanographers, including federal agencies associated with the Navy and NOAA. Stennis is within driving distance of the Port of Gulfport, New Orleans, and the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain.
